Insurance & Protection Plans

Last updated: May 22, 2026

Every Alvro trip includes physical damage and liability protection. This policy explains the plan options, what's covered, what's excluded, and how to file a claim if you need one.

01Summary

Every Alvro trip includes a protection plan selected by the renter at checkout. Hosts are protected by liability coverage and physical damage protection, and renters can choose how much risk they want to absorb in exchange for a lower price.

Protection continues to apply during a late return — up to the point Alvro initiates recovery of the vehicle — so the covered period matches the period for which late-return fees are charged. There is no uninsured gap between the scheduled return and recovery. (Draft — pending insurer confirmation.)

02Renter protection plans

Every trip includes a protection plan you choose at checkout. All three plans carry the same $1,000,000 liability limit and the same physical-damage protection — they differ only in the deductible, the most you pay out-of-pocket toward covered damage.

PlanYour deductibleLiability
Basic$3,000Up to $1,000,000
Standard$1,500Up to $1,000,000
Premium$750Up to $1,000,000

The per-day price of a plan is set at checkout based on the vehicle, driver, and trip — it isn't a flat rate. A plan with a lower deductible costs more per day. You'll always see the exact price for your booking before you confirm.

Your deductible is the most you pay out-of-pocket toward covered damage — Alvro's program covers the rest, up to the vehicle's actual cash value (capped at $100,000). That physical-damage cap is separate from, and in addition to, the $1,000,000 liability limit.

Every trip includes 24/7 roadside dispatch. Dispatch is free, and roadside help for a covered mechanical breakdown is free. Driver-caused call-outs — a lockout, running out of fuel, a dead battery, a flat tire, or the wrong fuel — are billed per the Fee Schedule ($60 light-duty roadside; $350 towing).

Diminished value (any drop in a vehicle's resale value after a repair) and personal belongings are not covered.

03Host protection

Hosts are automatically covered during every reserved trip with:

  • Up to $1,000,000 in liability protection from a licensed third-party insurer, on every plan.
  • Physical-damage protection up to the vehicle's actual cash value, capped at $100,000 — separate from the liability limit above, and net of the renter's plan deductible.
  • On a salvage- or rebuilt-title vehicle, repairs above the deductible are paid in full, but a total-loss payout is capped at 70% of the vehicle's actual cash value.
  • Lost-income reimbursement during covered repairs.
  • Reimbursement for excess wear, mileage, and cleaning fees.

Coverage is in effect from the scheduled pickup to the scheduled return time, plus any approved extensions. Outside of those times the host's personal insurance applies.

04What's not covered

  • Damage caused by a prohibited use of the vehicle.
  • Damage caused while the driver was unauthorized or impaired.
  • Damage incurred while the vehicle was being used for commercial purposes (rideshare, delivery, racing, etc.).
  • Mechanical breakdowns unrelated to a covered loss.
  • Diminished value — any reduction in the vehicle's resale value after a repair.
  • Personal belongings or items left in the vehicle.
  • Damage discovered after the trip has been closed for 24 hours without supporting evidence.

Every trip must begin, stay, and end within Alvro's active U.S. service areas. Driving across any international border — including into Mexico or Canada — is prohibited, voids all protection for the trip, and is a material breach.

05Filing a claim

If something happens during a trip:

  1. Ensure everyone is safe. Call 911 for any injury or hazard.
  2. File a police report when applicable.
  3. Take photos of all vehicles, damage, and the scene.
  4. Open a claim from the trip details screen within 24 hours.

An Alvro claims specialist will guide you through the rest. Most claims are resolved within 30 days; complex cases involving third parties may take longer.

If a covered incident or a mechanical failure takes the car off the road mid-trip, any replacement vehicle you arrange is a separate booking that you pay for up front. Whether that cost is reimbursed depends on the outcome of the claim — a covered host-side failure may be reimbursed, while a loss caused by prohibited use or renter fault is not. Confirm with the claims team before booking a replacement.

06Personal insurance

We strongly recommend renters and hosts maintain their own personal auto insurance. Alvro protection is designed to supplement personal coverage during a trip, not replace it for everyday driving.

07Decline protection / use your own insurance

You may decline Alvro's protection plan and use your own personal auto insurance for a trip. If you do, Alvro reviews your policy to confirm it is valid and covers the rental period before the trip is approved. Once approved, a $3,000 refundable security hold applies for that trip. On a trip where you use your own insurance, your insurer is fully responsible for both physical damage to the vehicle and third-party liability — Alvro's $1,000,000 liability coverage does not apply to that trip. Alvro coordinates any claim with your insurer on-platform. (Draft — pending insurer confirmation.)
